More About Us

Things are not always as they appear and the underlying cause of atherosclerosis is no exception. With heart disease claiming the lives of about 610,000 every year in the United States (that’s 1 in 4 deaths), making it the leading cause of death according to the CDC, it is a good idea to look at real prevention.

Often we think in terms of cholesterol and inflammation as underlying causes. However, new research is pointing to bacteria in your mouth as a major culprit. This also helps explain the gum disease – heart disease connection. In a nut shell, arteries clog when fatty substances build up on the walls of arteries and capillaries. The blood vessel walls become inflamed and the immune system sends cells to deal with the inflammation. Looking at the cause of inflammation can lead us down the path of understanding wellness. And it is quite possible (probable in my opinion) that the cause of inflammation lies in an underlying bacteria issue.

Well, it’s that time of year again. The cold and flu season has begun. Just yesterday I was at Whole Foods and as a lady offered me her shopping cart she made sure to let me know she wasn’t sick. We laughed a bit together and I for one counted my blessings. After all, I was recovering from a nasty head cold myself! After a bit of increased stress my immune system took a hit and lost its edge. I pushed myself a bit too far while writing a series of papers for a a New Testament class I was taking. As a result a cold virus got the better of me – ouch! I addressed it naturally and I am in fine shape now - lesson learned. No more late nights staying up writing papers - pace yourself Carolyn.

Given the “invasion” of the cold and flu viruses this time of year I thought a little practical, getting back to basics, advice is in order. Enjoy!

It’s that time of year again, cold and flu season is creeping in. While you will likely be exposed to the viruses associated with either or both, you need not succumb to the uncomfortable symptoms they offer. There’s a wise old saying that I adhere to: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

What is your Immune System?

Your immune system is your defense system that consists of many biological structures and processes to protect against disease. It is like a small police force constantly patrolling each organ and tissue in the body. Your immune system works together with your lymphatic system for production of lymphocytes and the circulatory system for transportation.
